Incessant rain didn’t prevent us scoring 5 tries to establish a 33- 0 lead at half time. A much drier 2nd half might have been expected to deliver an avalanche of points. Not a bit of it as we took our foot off the pedal and Penrith made us work hard for both possession and territory and indeed such was their tenacity until the last 5 minutes of the half we`d added only a solitary try to the first half score.
Ian Kennedy opened the scoring early on from close range, Mike Barlow then strode over from 22m out and then Mike Pearson showed a clean pair of heels from inside our own half. George Cook went over following a weaving run of high quality before Tom Carrington added the final try of the half with his first try on his first start for the team.
Not to be outdone, Nick Wroe continuing his try scoring form, added the first try of the 2nd half bursting through a number of would –be tacklers and also the final try, sandwiching a 2nd try for George.
Mike Barlow completed a good all round performance by kicking 6 conversions to finish with a personal tally of 17 pts. Mike Waddington was the pick of the forwards with a couple of barnstorming runs, whilst Scott Redfearn in the backs showed some good touches in his first appearance The highlight, though, was that after conceding an average of >20pts per game we kept a clean sheet by way of a much stronger defensive performance.
Next week sees us visit Caldy where we hope to be able to avenge the defeat in the cup fixture on the opening day of the season.
