With our usual Wordsmith absent once again it’s fallen to me to bring you the highlights from this week’s match against Knutsford. Apologies in advance as you’ll have to endure my attempt at recounting a thrilling afternoon of rugby where Stockport Spitfires stormed to a 33-10 victory. Thankfully, the on-field action speaks for itself ! Whilst it was a game of three thirds, on the pitch it was definitely more a game of two halves.

First Third: Spitfires in Control
. The Spitfires came out all guns firing, immediately taking control of the game. George Roberts opened the scoring with a strong run, powering through the Knutsford defence to touch down. Shortly after, Cormac Williams showed his elusive running, darting through a gap to score the second try. Harry Beisly followed up with a well-taken third try after some slick passing through the backline. Oscar Parker then capped off the first third with a fourth try, showcasing his quick thinking to exploit a defensive lapse. Oscar also converted all four tries, giving Stockport a commanding 28-0 lead at the break.

Second Third: Knutsford’s Fightback
. The second third was a different story as Knutsford began to claw their way back into the game. Stockport, having lent Knutsford two props to even up the teams, struggled to maintain the same momentum, and decisions started to go against them. Knutsford applied more pressure, and eventually, their persistence paid off with a try. Fortunately for the Spitfires, the conversion was missed, and the second third ended with Knutsford closing the gap to 28-5. Despite Knutsford’s improved performance, Stockport’s defence held firm, preventing further damage.

Final Third: Grit and Determination
... The final third was a closely contested affair, unlike the opening, with Knutsford continuing to push for points. They added an unconverted try to make the score 28-10, but Stockport dug deep to hold them back from crossing the line again. In the dying moments of the game, TK found space to power over for the Spitfires’ fifth try, sealing the win at 33-10. Although the conversion was missed, the Spitfires finished the game on a high note, showing their resilience and composure in the final stages.

Final Thoughts:
The Spitfires' brilliant first third proved decisive, but the game wasn’t without its challenges. Knutsford’s second-third fightback showed Stockport’s need to maintain consistency throughout the game. To sweeten the day even more, a tasty Cake Sale helped raise funds towards our post-match No.1's shirts, making the victory that much sweeter both on and off the field.
