Cheshire Cup, Round 1

It was an early start for Spitfires this morning with a trip over to the Wirrall and the opening match of this teams first foray in the Cheshire Cup against Anselmians RFC.
Looking Resplendent once more in their No 1’s this was their first ‘competitive’ game as players and so their was a lot at stake, not least their own pride. For their part, Anselmians looked to be a strong outfit having run in some good results, it was all to play for.

In sideways driving rain Spitfires took to the pitch with an air of self-belief and expectation we don’t often see and it was clear the coaches words had been heeded and nothing was going to be left on the pitch.

Over two halves both teams were closely matched and there was clearly much improvement in many areas of Spitfires game, from tackling to some really slick handling. It was a joy to watch these young lads play to the ability they clearly have. TK, Bonner, Powel, Condron and Coveney-Winter carried the ball well in open play with the forwards working hard to provide good ball for the backs with Howard and Williams looking threatening in the back line.
Spitfires only try was testament to this with the forwards grinding out territory before Hull released the ball through the back line for Price to go over for the classic wingers try. This was a real ‘team try’ created and finished by the whole team and a just reward for much pressure in the opposition half. Unfortunately, the whistle made phases of the game a bit stop/start and Beisly was unlucky not to go over in the corner for a second try.

In fairness to Anselmians they worked hard to get back into the game and this paid off with a well worked try from pressure in the Spitfires ’22 drawing the scores even
It would be easy to mention the entire squad in a match report, today they were all worthy of it. This was a real ‘Team effort and despite a cup draw, Spitfires were awarded the win as the away team. But….. please don’t kick the ball on the ground anymore!

A great first cup win for Spitfires who, to a man, should be justifiably proud of a good days rugby.
Well played lads, well played indeed

Onwards ……
